Driving In The Dark

It’s that time of year again when it gets darker earlier and for longer. This means you’re probably going to be exposed to the challenges of driving in the dark. Have a read of some of our top tips on how to stay safe at night.

This goes without saying. If it’s dark you need to have your lights on. This is so you can see the road ahead and other drivers can see you. Use your full beams when the road ahead is clear and then your dipped headlights if there is oncoming traffic. Check your headlights are working and are clean before you set off. It’s illegal to drive without fully functioning headlights, so you don’t want to be pulled over for this.

Naturally, your body wants to sleep during the night. This creates a huge challenge when driving as your reactions and judgement may be affected. It’s important to be well rested before you set off on your journey. Planning can also help as you can factor in breaks on your journey. Don’t push your limits. If you’re tired, get a hotel as the price of a room is far less than a price of an accident.

Reduce Your Speed

Your vision at night is heavily affected. This could be problematic with potential hazards, such as animals, pedestrian or other road users. Your headlights will only reach so far. It will give you less of a reaction time, especially when travelling at speed. The slower you go, the more time you have to react.

Keep Your Windscreen Clean
Your windscreen can be prone to dirt. It can pick up anything from dust to flies. The dirtier the windscreen, the lower the visibility. Not only that, oncoming lights will appear to be a lot brighter and potentially dazzle you. A simple clean before you set off can go a long way.

Sometimes, an oncoming vehicle can dazzle you by forgetting to switch their full beam lights off. A top tip for this is to focus on the left curb for guidance, rather than the oncoming vehicles. If your sight is still a bit dazzled, safely pull over and wait until you are comfortable to continue.

Other Drivers
There’s a lot you can do in order to help out other drivers on the road. For example, if you’re at a traffic light, use the handbrake. If you have your foot on the break, your brake lights could dazzle the driver behind you. Another helpful move comes from when you’re being overtaken. If you keep your full beams on up to the point they are about to pass you, it gives them that extra visibility of any oncoming hazards.
